Before comparing types, it helps to know what a protective foam is actually being asked to do. Four properties matter:
- Impact absorption. The foam has to soak up the energy of a drop before that energy reaches your product.
- Compression recovery. Good packaging foam springs back after being squashed. Poor foam stays flat and stops protecting after the first knock.
- Surface safety. A non abrasive face matters enormously for polished, coated or painted items.
- Moisture and chemical resistance. Damp storage, unheated vans and sea freight all punish foams that absorb water.

Types of Packaging Foam and What Each One Protects Best
Reconstituted Foam (RECON Chip Foam)
Reconstituted foam, also called chip foam or crumb foam, is made by bonding recycled polyurethane offcuts into a dense uniform block. The marbled multicoloured finish comes from the recycled content. It is firm, resilient and genuinely economical, which makes it the workhorse choice for bulk cushioning where cost per square metre matters.

Cross Linked Closed Cell Foam
Cross linked polyethylene takes closed cell performance a step further. The cross linking process produces a rigid, fine celled sheet that is waterproof, chemically resistant and stable across a very wide temperature range. It handles conditions that would degrade softer foams: grease, mildew, salt air, freezing storage.

How Thick Should Packaging Foam Be?
Thickness decides how much room the foam has to absorb an impact before your product feels it. A useful starting point:

Foam Density vs Firmness: The Distinction That Matters
Density and firmness get used interchangeably, and that causes most of the wrong purchases we see.
Density describes how much material is packed into the foam. It drives durability and how much force the foam can absorb before it fully compresses. RECON 9LB is denser than RECON 6LB, so it withstands heavier loads for longer.
Firmness describes how the foam feels under hand pressure. A foam can be dense and still have some give, depending on how it is formulated.

How to Choose the Right Packaging Foam in Four Questions
How heavy is the item?
Heavier products need denser foam. If the foam compresses flat under the product's own weight before it even ships, it is providing almost no cushioning. Move up to RECON 9LB or a thicker closed cell sheet.
How easily is the surface marked?
Polished, coated and painted surfaces need a non abrasive face. Stratocell® is the safer choice here than a coarse chip foam pressed directly against the finish.
Will it meet moisture, cold or chemicals?
If yes, go to a closed cell. Stratocell® handles moisture, dust and oils. ImpactSeal BFSCC30 goes further with full waterproofing and a temperature range from minus 60°C to 90°C.
Is this a single shipment or repeated use?
For one off shipments a cut to size sheet is the economical answer. For kit boxes, tool cases and returnable packaging, a shaped insert pays for itself over repeated trips.
Packaging Foam vs Bubble Wrap: Which Actually Protects Better?
Bubble wrap is quick, cheap and fine for light parcels. It also has real limits that show up on anything valuable.
Air pockets deflate. Once they pop or flatten under sustained weight, the cushioning is simply gone, and there is no way to tell from the outside that it happened three stops into the journey. Foam keeps its thickness under pressure and recovers after compression, so the protection at delivery matches the protection at dispatch.
Bubble wrap also gives no structural support. It cushions a drop but does not hold an item still, so products shift, collide and rub against each other in transit. Foam cut to fit removes that movement entirely.
Where bubble wrap earns its place is on odd shapes and low value goods. For everything else, foam is the more predictable choice, and plenty of packers use both: a thin foam layer against the surface to prevent marks, foam blocks around it for structure.

A flat sheet works well for lining a box. It works far less well for an awkwardly shaped product, because every gap you leave is somewhere the item can move.
